GROVEPORT, OH: – After forty-three years in one spot, local restaurant Little Italy Pizza will be moving to a new location just down the street, but a world away in terms of opportunity.

The pizzeria will be moving to the Wert’s Grove building at College and Main Streets as part of the city of Groveport’s 1847 Main Project, a $7.6 million downtown redevelopment undertaking that will provide space for commercial development in the historic downtown area. The building is named after Wert’s Grove, one of two original settlements from which Groveport originated.

Little Italy Pizza Operations Manager Avery Ward is the third generation to operate the popular restaurant. His grandparents, Chuck and Janet Ward, began the pizzeria while also operating a nearby grocery store they had taken over in 1966. As larger supermarkets began to squeeze out smaller mom-and-pop grocers, the Wards decided to close the grocery and move the pizzeria into the space, where it has been since 1979. Ward credits his grandparents and father, Nick Ward, for establishing the restaurant as a popular eatery with strong ties to the community.

“My dad built a longstanding relationship with our customer base that remains strong today,” Ward said in an announcement about the relocation to his staff. “He has passed down those core values to me. . . it’s with those values that I was able to take our business to new heights in the last four years.”

Noting that at times in the last year his restaurant simply couldn’t keep up with demand due to space constraints, Ward is ecstatic about the opportunity for growth in the new building. Little Italy Pizza will occupy the entire first floor, approximately 5200 square feet, according to Ward. He plans to add a hand-dipped ice cream parlor, full bar, and a separate entrance for pick-up orders. He describes the new space as “modern, light, and open.” The decor will incorporate the history of not only his family’s restaurant legacy, but also the history of Groveport.

Ward hopes the space will be finished by winter 2022 or early 2023.

“We envision this space being a gathering space for our community,” Ward says. “[We] can’t wait to see the type of experience this space brings our guests.”
